Clara Lieu, RISD Adjunct Professor

A Message from Prof Lieu

The first time I thought about Art Prof in 2014, I remember it as one of those pie in the sky ideas that you entertain yourself with briefly. I imagined Art Prof as my own “cooking show,” where I could share the art techniques and projects I loved with an audience of eager students outside of my classroom.

Six years later, I always get a good laugh thinking about how that serious RISD Prof who scripted every word on camera in 2015 sure wouldn’t recognize the Michael Fassbender fangirl who runs our streams today!

Art Prof isn’t just me, and it isn’t me plus our fabulous group of artists who teach and critique their hearts out every week.

Art Prof is YOU, a global online community that cares deeply about art, learning, and sharing.  I think we all know that the Internet isn’t exactly known for inspiring polite behavior among people, and yet there is now this very special place online for artists that I love and cherish: the Art Prof family.

The Art Prof family is the 8 year old who did the April Art Dare, whose mother told me that art is the only thing that keeps her from feeling alone during quarantine.

The Art Prof Family is the full-time working mom who just picked up art again after a very long hiatus, the lifelong learner who always dreamed of going to art school but never did because of a chronic illness, the young artist with BIG DREAMS who told us “I’m a kid now but watch and see!”

Art Prof is having some growing pains right now, the flip side of our success. Our reach is exploding which is absolutely thrilling, but consequently, the administrative tasks to maintain Art Prof are ballooning every day, and our shoe string budget isn’t even close to catching up.

Art Prof Testimonial
Art Prof Testimonial

I’ve got 30 years of content in my head that I am dying to put on video for you, but spreadsheets & emails are consuming my days right now. With an increased budget, we can provide:

• more live drawing streams
• more resources for teachers & students during the quarantine
• run special live events like the 2020 Art Prof Graduation
• more live streams with 3 staff
• increased staff time in Discord
• get to your video suggestions sooner
• release our studio tutorials sooner
Upcoming tutorials include a watercolor tutorial with Prof Lieu, a pen & marker tutorial with Song Kang, a rose drawing tutorial with Kathleen Speranza, and more!

I hope you’ll participate in our spring raffle!  Boy do we have some amazing raffle prizes: a box of yummy art supplies could magically appear on our door step, or the painting you watched Alex paint from beginning to end in our gouache tutorial might just end up on your living room wall.
