2021 Art Prof Winter Raffle

A Message from Prof Lieu

I love it when an artwork I make surprises me. Most of the time when I sit down to draw, I have a loose idea of what I want to achieve and some goals. Despite those expectations, my artwork still continues to surprise me, and Art Prof is no exception to that.

That pie in the sky idea that started Art Prof sure has changed! Never in a million years could I have foreseen the format and content we are producing today. My initial idea of Art Prof was so rigid compared to the fluid, spontaneous, and yes, messy version of what we have today.

When we started doing live Draw Along streams, my assumption was that people would just watch and learn. How wrong I was! People took out their art supplies and drew with me in real time. Now, one of my favorite parts of Art Prof is seeing your artwork pop up in the #art-alongs channel in our Discord server.

The biggest surprise of all has been YOU, the Art Prof family. Before I started using Discord for the Art Prof Discord server, I have to admit that I scoffed at my husband Alex for making friends online. Boy did I eat my words! I had no idea it was possible to connect with people online across the world with the level of depth, thoughtfulness, and caring that I have seen in our Discord.

Even after I made the decision to leave RISD, I still worried about leaving the brick and mortar classroom behind. Would my connections to my online students pale to the depth of relationships I had with in person students? Would my lessons not be absorbed to the same depth and degree I was accustomed to in person? Would the lack of structure in online learning dilute the experience?

We are living in a moment of seismic change in education. With the transition to online teaching because of the global pandemic, nothing is going to be the same in education once we get back to “normal.”  Over the past year, I’ve done faculty training lectures at colleges and school districts, which has given me the opportunity to take a broader view given that I had a 6 year jump start on teaching online.  I’ve had some important realizations during that time.

Online teaching vs. in person teaching really is a matter of apples and oranges. In person teaching isn’t superior to online teaching, it’s just different. Yes, I miss meeting up with students for a cup of coffee, but the fact that I get to paint live with over 150 people watching from countries all over the world still blows my mind. I’ve learned about idioms from many cultures, received snail mail from Portugal, expanded my knowledge of Brazilian candy, and so much more.

At RISD, my time with students was limited to 12 weeks. Here at Art Prof I have people whose progress I have been following for over a year now! The depth of the connections you can have over that period of time is truly extraordinary.

Art Prof requires many skilled staff, equipment, and materials to stay up and running.  We are having tremendous growth right now, but that also means that our expenses continue to balloon every day.

Your continued support is what makes it possible for us to keep Art Prof 100% free

We work really hard to stretch our tiny shoe string budget as far as we can, and I often times cannot believe the ridiculous scrappy things I do to save every penny. Our budget still isn’t even close to catching up to our needs and our current financial situation isn’t sustainable long term. At the end of each month, I breathe a sigh of relief that we managed to survive another month.

Our expenses are ongoing, and we need your support to cover many items, including:

Monthly hosting fees for Artprof.org, monthly fees for our email list platform, monthly fees for the Art Prof Reference Photo collection, art supplies for our live draw along streams, equipment for each our staff artists which includes everything on this page and more, equipment for our studio & travel tutorials, office supplies, shipping costs for art dare prizes, renting a post office box, stipends to bring in guest artists, monthly fees for TubeBuddy to assist with our YouTube channel, monthly fees for Streamyard which we use for every live stream, a social media assistant, our 5 Teaching Artists, and more!

I love that when I wake up in the morning, my head explodes with ideas for Art Prof.

You know that feeling when you are SO into your artwork that you forget to eat (even to pee sometimes) and the whole world around you disappears? That’s Art Prof for me, I’m so in love with what we do that every time someone suggests an idea for a stream I can feel my brain doing a rocket launch.

I hope you’ll participate in our winter raffle!  Let’s keep Art Prof 100% free and accessible to everybody.
