Whether you’re working independently as an artist, enrolled in a degree program, or thinking about art school, an Artist Advice session is a great way to get fresh opinions on your artistic practice. You’ll get advice that is customized to your specific needs and questions!

Perhaps you want us to look at your artist website & your social media presence, maybe you are considering going back to school after having a career for many years in a different professional field. You might be trying to decide between pursuing a career in illustration or fine art. Maybe you’re questioning whether to take the leap to become a full-time artist; perhaps you are not feeling supported by your family and friends in your art pursuits, and more.

Preparing your submission

Please read through this entire form first before you start preparing your materials. When you are ready to submit the form, have your required information ready. We recommend writing your statement elsewhere first so that you have a copy of it in case anything happens as you are filling out the form.

Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis.

To appear live on video, you will need to do a test stream with us in advance to make sure the tech is working. To see what a stream with a guest artist looks like, watch this video. We stream weekdays at 10pm EST and weekends at 12pm EST, so you would have to be available during those times.

Writing your statement

Your statement is enormously helpful to us when learning about your background, experience and topics you're interesting in discussing with us. We do consider the amount of effort and thought an artist invests into writing their statement when we review submissions. If you copy and paste your biography from your website instead of answering the questions below, write a very short statement that is only about 2 sentences, or if you type curt answers to our questions below, your submission is much less likely to be accepted.

We recommend writing your statement elsewhere first so that you have a copy of it saved in case anything happens while you are filling out this form.

Please answer these questions in your artist statement.

1. What is your background as an artist?

2. Explain what art media you have worked with.

3. What themes and subjects have you explored in your artwork?

4. What topics would you like to discuss with us during the stream? (Examples: should I go back to art school? Should I pursue fine art or illustration? How can I market my artwork more effectively?)

5. What are your long term goals as an artist?

6. Anything else you'd like us to know about you or your artwork.

Please format your statement as a narrative statement that is written in first person. If you type short answers to our questions into the text area without formatting it as a narrative statement, your submission will not be accepted.

Please use one of the options below for this submission. During the stream, we are happy to look at any combination of the options below. Don't worry about how finished or professional your artwork/website/Instagram/etc. looks. Our decision making process is not based on who has the "best" or most polished work, rather we are looking for diverse artists to represent a wide range of experiences will provide good teaching moments for our audience.

• 8-10 high resolution artwork images via Google Drive.

Paste the link to either 1) your artist website, 2) your artist Instagram, or a shareable link to your portfolio folder in Google Drive. If you are sharing via Google Drive, please follow the instructions below.

Sharing images via Google Drive

1. Create a folder in Google Drive and name it with your first & last name, like this: "Jane Doe, YT live portfolio critique application." Please do not create other folders within this folder.

2. Create a Google Doc in this folder and write a statement in this doc. Do not send us a PDF, .docx, or any other file type for your statement. In your statement, write about yourself and your background as an artist. Explain your motivation, intent, creative process, and if you have any short term or long term goals. If you have any specific questions, please include those as well.

3. Upload high res JPG files of 10-15 artworks -OR- if you work in time based media, add a video link into the Google doc mentioned above. For each 2D artwork, submit only 1 JPG file. For 3D artworks, you may submit 2 JPG files per artwork.

4. Rename each JPG file like this: “Jane Doe_001.jpg.” , “Jane Doe_002.jpg”, “Jane Doe_003.jpg.”

5. Open each JPG, click on the 3 dot icon in the upper right, and select “Details.” In the new window, scroll down to the “Description” section. In this section, add the title, media and size of the artwork. Example: “Self-Portrait, oil on canvas, 18″ x 24.”

6. Right click on your folder, and select "Share." Change the sharing setting to "Anyone on the internet with this link can edit."

7. Right click on your folder, and select “Get Shareable Link.” Copy the link and paste it below. Questions? Contact us.
