Illustrator & Comics Artist
“My name is Cat, I’m an art school student, and I study illustration. When I was 4 years old I went to a very strict, very religious preschool where the people in charge would tell us when to eat, when to pray, when to have class. The most free time I had in that school was drawing class. Essentially I could do anything I wanted, and one day I drew a portrait of myself and my cousin. But I wanted to write my name, and I didn’t remember how to spell my name. So I put all the letters I did know: A-B-I-L-I-O in that order, ‘ABILIO.’
When I brought that drawing home, my mother was amazed by this portrait. She thought it was very beautiful and she framed it, and she hung it up in the house and I thought: ‘Why did she do that?’ But the more I looked at this drawing, the more I realized that it was a charming picture, and I really enjoyed myself. Then I realized that maybe art and drawing was something I could do for the rest of my life.
The work I do is 2D based, I really enjoy working with comics. A lot of the work I do is narrative based with a moral at the end. For instance, I was tasked to illustrate an argument in the comic form, and the character I had were an exhausted mother size and an incessantly crying baby. The mother tries all sorts of ways to get her baby to quiet down. Eventually she yells at the baby because she’s so exhausted. However, at the end, the conflict is resolved through pure love.
I hope in the future that I’m working with narrative work as always, maybe in the form of movies, or games, or even comics, which I’m very passionate about. However what I really want to do is travel the world, learn about new cultures and languages, and draw the whole time.”
