Artist Statement
“As an artist, I am currently trying to develop my skills across the board. I haven’t taken art in school since I was 13 years old, about 3 years ago now. My current attempts to develop my skills are with the intention of doing a foundation year, and then continuing on to art school.
I created the artwork as I wanted to depict contrast; the fox is a creature which I view as strong and powerful, so I wanted to paint one in the softest medium I knew of- watercolor. Foxes are creatures that hold a lot of personal meaning to me, which helps to make them one of my favorite things to paint or draw.
The process for this piece was very much led by the medium, all prior studies relating to this piece were focused on how the watercolor interacts with itself and the paper, rather than composition and anatomy studies.”
Artists mentioned in the critique
Joe McKendry, Joseph Zbukvic, Bill Watterson’s comic strip Calvin & Hobbes.
