Artist Statement
“I am a sixteen years old. I take the art program available at my school but am otherwise self taught. With this piece I aimed to convey feelings of exuberance and freedom by using vibrant colors and fluid, lively poses. I tried to be looser with my brush strokes in order to make it feel more energetic.
To me this piece is about how women shouldn’t have to feel like we need to cover our bodies to be treated with respect. In the society we live in, we are often taught that our bodies are something to be ashamed of and to hide, but I think that we should be free to celebrate and love ourselves.”
Artists mentioned in the critique
Egon Schiele, Käthe Kollwitz‘s piece Worker Woman with Sleeping Child, Edgar Degas.
