“Hi! I’m Ellie and I’m 19. I’m currently pursuing a BFA in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts! This is supposed to be a self portrait, and I really tried to play around with color! I painted this without a photo reference because I wanted to create an image of myself from my mind. This idea of myself is something intangible, so by painting this I was able to create something tangible.”
“The atmosphere in this piece is really successful in large part because of the way that you have handled not only the naturalistic human figure but even the simpler sort of choral shapes on the left and right side of the composition.
Especially how even those abstract shapes you’ve given sort of three dimensional form. I love the form shadows on the edges and in particular the cast shadow that they create on the figures face really does a lot to integrate this composition.
One thing that feels sort of indecisive to me however is just the placement of the figure. I think with this sort of uncanny atmosphere that you’re going for, a central composition could be really strong if you really push it. Right now it feels sort of in between. I’d also love to see more interaction between the colors in this piece. Maybe have some red in the reflected light in the blue figure’s face.
Otherwise I do think that your color palette is very strong.”
