Prize Winner
“Initially started to draw and shade with graphite. However I wanted this portrait to be more expressive and decided to go for charcoal instead.
Initial layers established with vine charcoal and some final touches with compressed charcoal. Portrait is of a Rajasthani man with turban and short kept beard.”
Honorable Mention

“This art dare provided me with the perfect opportunity to dip a toe into the world of self portraits.
The last time I had to paint a self portrait, I had to use the grid system which felt more like copying to me.

So it was a fun challenge for me to work on capturing my big beard and the expression on my face in two different levels of abstraction.
The facial hair frames in the expression and helped guide my positioning through the process of making this piece. Making the cubist interpretation was like a fun puzzle to figure out.”
