This piece is called “Roe” because the orange beads look like tobiko which are fish eggs. When I first heard of the prompt: patterns, I thought of the more free-flowing organic patterns found in nature and art inspired by those shapes.

To create the background, I splashed water onto the canvas then used a dropper to spray ink on one side then let the ink move as it liked. With the cut-out magazine images, once I liked the layout, I used push pins to keep the images locked in place.

Careful to only make whole that will have thread going through them or hidden under images. All of the magazine images and beads are attached to the canvas with only thread.

During my brainstorming for this dare, I kept coming back to the old idea of history repeating itself creating a pattern. This linoleum print uses the political party colors and directions – blue faceless heads pointing left and red faceless heads pointing right.

The blocks repeat in a quilt like pattern with the faceless heads turning towards each other in conflict or facing away dismissively. When conflict becomes so intense we stop seeing each other as human the most horrific parts of our past are bound to repeat.
