Artist Residencies

Residencies are a fantastic way to create focused time and space to work! Look really carefully when you are researching these programs.

Some programs are fully funded, like the Rome Prize. Naturally, these are highly competitive. You might receive for example room and board, but not your airfare. Other residencies you might as well book your own vacation!

Most residencies will require a CV (curriculum vitae), an artist statement, and often a project proposal, and sometimes other paperwork.

This can vary greatly depending on the program, so read the fine print before you decide to apply!

Mentor based residencies

Lauryn’s insider scoop from Art Club: “Mentor based residencies focus on a mentorship where you have regular meetings with a mentor that are usually a combo of online and in-person and are designed so that you form a close relationship with your mentor.

Eloise and I did one of these mentorship type residencies with If/Then when we were working on our first film. It was very rewarding.

Our mentor helped us with putting together our Press Kit, got us hooked up with different film festivals, and advised us on contracts. But that was really film distribution-specific.

There are plenty for say, painters or performance artists where critique is more at the center of the relationship.”
