Art Club Activities

Instead of searching for and watching endless videos that don’t contain that nugget of information you’re needing, you’ll get a lively discussion amongst a diverse group of artists who offer all sorts of suggestions that you never dreamed of.”

Chat with pro artists

Most artists don’t know professional artists they can speak with, and don’t have any artist friends on a regular basis.

“Best of all the staff artists are not shy in disagreeing with each other. You’re going to hear a variety of perspectives that will force you to really think about your own ideas and approaches.”

You’ll get to know our staff really well! We have expertise in painting, concept art, illustration, drawing, digital, printmaking, comics, design, sculpture, film, and more.

Connect with other artists

Many art communities online are largely about self-promotion and are a dumping ground for people to show their work without any mutual exchange.

Art Club is a small group where it’s easy to connect with others. Learning is so much more fun in a group.

The community is not just about getting good at technique, it also emphasizes finding your voice as an artist, professional and financial tips, education advice, wellbeing, and community building.”

“There are very few places where fine artists congregate and actually discuss and critique art and support each other with their knowledge, observations and encouragement.”

I like how applicable everything is, even if I don’t do Gelli plates, it’s so entertaining with Prof Lieu, it makes me want to do gelli plates (example haha).”

Discord

If Discord is totally new to you, don’t worry! We will hold your hand through every step of the way, so you’ll plenty of support to get going.

Discord is new to me. Prof Lieu went out of her way to help set me up on the application ahead of the live session.

She answered my questions about the app and resolved technical issues promptly. As a result, the use of Discord went smoothly.

We have friendly moderators and staff to assist you and answer your questions. Many members are happy to help too.!

“I learn something new just about every time I visit Art Club and best of all, I’m learning from others as they too are learning.

I never would have been brave enough to submit one of my paintings so soon after starting with painting if it hadn’t been for Art Club. I submitted my work for a major art prize and it was selected as a finalist!”

Socializing

Art Club is also a place to socialize and share your artwork in a casual, low pressure space that is warm and supportive.

Being an artist isn’t just about making the artwork, so much of it is talking about what we are noticing as artists and sharing resources with each other.

“How supportive and informative all the staff are is most significant to me. How deep and diverse the amount of knowledge ya’ll have combined is a goldmine.”

Sharing your art

So many artists tell me that they feel like they are shouting out into the void when they post their artwork on social media. That won’t happen in Art Club because we make sure that everyone to be seen.

In Art Club, you’ll see people posting their progress at various stage of development. Seeing the rough work, the “ugly phase” of an artwork in the early stages is where the learning really happens.

We’ll meet you where you’re at

If you’re a beginner artist, Art Club is a great fit for you!

Often people are intimidated to join, because they worry that their skill level won’t be sufficient and that everyone else will be accomplished.

We will meet you where you’re at, and provide customized advice to help you improve. We are so proud when we can help you create the art you want to make.

Critiques

Art Club critiques are a 2-3 min audio recording by Prof Lieu which are accompanied by a written transcript.

Sample audio critique

The format of our critique channels consolidates all of your progress in on a 1 artwork in 1 post. This is a great way to look back and see your progression with the feedback.

We encourage members to get several rounds of critiques on the same artwork.

Critique is most impactful when we can look at how the artwork progresses and make suggestions at every stage of development.

Q&A Chats

Voice chats are casual sessions with our staff. These sessions are great if you are frustrated an artwork, need a boost, and want to know what to do next. We critique your art as well!

Live Streams

Live art alongs in Art Club are a great way to create art in real time in a group, and to have your artwork critiqued during the live stream.

Since it’s a small group attending these live streams, we can have in depth conversations and give your questions more attention.

Seeing everyone’s unique response to the same reference image will show you different ways of working that you can apply to your own work!
