Lauryn Welch

I live in Brooklyn, New York, and am a recent MFA graduate from Hunter College. I completed my BFA in Painting at Purchase College.

I have exhibited my paintings in New York, London, Miami, and Palm Springs, as well as across New England and the Midwest. I have co-directed an award-winning short film with Eloise Sherrid that is available to watch through PBS, and has screened at film festivals globally. I have also been on a panel discussion about mail art at the College Art Association.

I’ve taught studio art at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Peterborough Art Academy, and the RISD Pre-College Program. I’ve worked with educators teaching painting and cyanotype at MassArt New England.

For several years, I was the gallery manager and curator for the Sharon Arts Gallery in New Hampshire.

When I was 16 years old, my parents enrolled me in a portfolio class at a local art center. This class totally blew up my idea of what it meant to be an artist and I ended up changing my career path to art. I’ve been putting one foot in front of the other down that winding road ever since.”

Artist Statement

I make acrylic paintings about the relationship between private space and the people that inhabit and shape it.

I draw from my experiences in caregiving and chronic illness to depict the many joyful, loving, idiosyncratic, and fraught formulations of private space between two people.

I use magical realism as a way to describe the psychological tenor and history interwoven between body and interior. My subjects are of the everyday. I paint my partner, our tchotchkes, plants, cats, birds, and windows.

I use maximalism to create a sense of space that telescopes in on itself, and use color and pattern to unify the digressions of detail within my paintings. I work iteratively, reconfiguring old paintings within new ones to generate worlds within worlds.
