I’m an educator, art director, and storyteller, currently located in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. I earned my BFA in Illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design, and have held various art positions across industries, from being an Associate Art Director at Airbnb to a Teaching Artist here at Art Prof.
When I was 4 years old, I went to a very strict & religious preschool where the people in charge would tell us when to eat, when to pray, and when to have class. The most free time I had in that school was drawing class. Essentially I could do anything I wanted, and one day I drew a portrait of myself and my cousin.
I wanted to write my name, and I didn’t remember how to spell my name, so I put all the letters I did know: A-B-I-L-I-O in that order, ‘ABILIO.’ My mother loved the drawing, and framed it in our house. I always thought, ‘Why did she do that? It’s such a casual drawing,’ but the more I looked at it, the more I realized that it was a charming picture, and most importantly, I enjoyed myself while making it. I then realized that art and drawing was something I could do for the rest of my life.
I am most passionate about creating comic stories. They are a perfect mix of my two passions – art and literature. Although I am interested in stories of all genres, I find myself most drawn to human relationships and emotions. I usually use dip pen + ink + digital coloring for my comics, but am also open to media such as chalk pastel, charcoal, and oil paint.
