“Since my grandmother’s passing a few months ago, I’ve been learning to sew on her vintage Janome New Home sewing machine. I decided to try a big, challenging project to really get to know her machine, so I started making this quilt. I started by reading Crazy Shortcut Quilts by Marguerita McManus and Sarah Raffuse.

Then I started collecting scraps of fabric in the blue family as blue is my absolute favorite color. Some of the scraps included my and my daughter’s old baby blankets, my husband’s shirts, some fabric from my grandmother’s collection, leftovers from my art classroom, and fabric I found at an estate sale.

Other colors like brown and white started to appear in the patterned fabrics I was choosing and so I added them as supporting colors. As I pieced and quilted everything together, I got to experiment with different colored threads and the embroidery pattern cams that came with the machine.

Overall, this has been a really challenging and fun experience. My quilt has a lot of beginner’s mistakes, but they tell the story of my learning journey and I’ve learned so much! I’m so in love with my quilt. It will be a treasured possession for a long time.”

“In trying one colour marker sketches I thought I wanted to draw a subject that wasn’t normally that colour. I also thought of colour to express emotions and wanted to try finding reference photos of animals in various expressions and try to pair that with a colour. I flipped the script on some emotions and colour combos.

For my mad kitty drawing I used yellow, for my happy skipping elephant I used red, for the sly puppy I used purple, for the surprised/timid raccoon I used green and for the two baby chicks I used blue.

I also explored more natural colours for the animal I was drawing like pink for a hamster, then beige/browns for capybaras and greys for a husky puppy.

I was so happy to use my ohuhu 120 marker set and having almost 10 different shades of a colour to draw with made me feel like I wasn’t limited.

I was able to take my mad kitty drawing and do up a T-shirt design that makes me laugh.”
