“This dare was the perfect excuse to just start and see where it goes.

It was really exciting to let go of perfectionism and realism, and find new ways to convey an image- like using sand to mimic the jellyfish’s stinger, and spackle for the movement in the water.”

“I used some of my coffee stained post its to do a sample in my art journal to see how color would look over them. I carved out stamps to make some of the bricks (which are in the two corners) and then worked around them using markers, a Micron and some Posca paint pens.

As a community garden coordinator I’ve been fascinated by wasps all summer, and how they’re underrated as beneficial insects because they don’t have the same PR as bees. I tried and failed to print an article about garden-friendly insects on the ceiling of this piece, so instead I used an image of the moon from the newspaper.

I drew my front porch, then made a stencil from the drawing on a cracker box. The wall is printed with acrylic paint using layers and masks on a gelli plate. Because many wasps construct nests from paper, I made mine from a mix of toilet paper and acrylic paint.

I also made a print of a pond scene using ash from burned scouring rushes. I’d seen someone use ashes from their deceased pet to make a painting. At the time I was learning to gelli print nests, and wondered if I could incorporate ashes to further represent the environment and touch upon cycles of life and death.

Scouring rush has a high silica content, so I thought it might make a gritty ash. Ash with gel medium alone wasn’t opaque, so I had to combine it with black acrylic paint, which I was able to successfully pull with some practice. The idea to gelli print a nest came from a tutorial by Gelli Printing with Gabrielle.”
