This video shows the results of the April 2024 Art Dare: Anything but your dominant hand. Discussion led by Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Mia Rozear.
Prize Winner
“Due to the ridiculousness of painting with my right foot/left hand, I set up two equally ridiculous still life, and made two YouTube videos documenting the thought process.”
Honorable Mention
“This art dare was perfect for me to relinquish control, for I could always blame my non-dominant (left) hand!
When I started I was using hand muscles I didn’t know I had. Over the next few days, as I overcame that discomfort, I realized that my left hand was a better painter because it was looser.
I was also using notepads and backsides of other sketches for this art dare. All leading to me not worrying about creating ‘good’ art.
Over the month, I also noticed that I was using my left hand more when doing the dishes or cleaning the home, a welcome spillover from my art practice!
I also tried painting with a brush held in my mouth, but the copious salivation that ensued was a deterrent to continue.”

“I enjoyed the challenge of painting with my non dominant hand I have made a few more paintings already using my left hand.
I think my favorite part was seeing how different the brushstrokes looked in comparison to my right handed paintings.”
