This video shows the results of the Sept 2024 Art Dare: Post-it Notes. Discussion led by Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Dorian Epps.
Prize Winner
“This art dare piece was an excuse to do something different. I decided to do a post-it dress. I use a plain colored pink post-it and a printed pastel pink post-it.
I have no sewing training, so figuring out the pattern was all a guessing game. This piece is a celebration of all the things that I like that are ‘traditionally feminine,’ (even though I’m a man)”
Honorable Mention
“I used some of my coffee stained post its to do a sample in my art journal to see how color would look over them. I carved out stamps to make some of the bricks (which are in the two corners) and then worked around them using markers, a Micron and some Posca paint pens.
This was inspiration from my granddaughter’s new guitar and a song that she is currently working on singing in voice lessons called ‘Distance’ by Liv.
This intuitive mixed media piece is based off of real life experience coping with emotions surrounding the difficulties facing my mother who has dementia. I haven’t seen her in 8 years and it is difficult and I needed to process through my thoughts, feelings, and ghosts from the past.
My process includes a first layer of white post its I stained with coffee to give a vintage and toned color as well as texture. Some of the post its were also crumpled giving a raised texture in her hair. I wrote a letter to my mom and then used the post it’s randomly for collage on the bottom layer that built the foundation for the bricks and the figure.
Collage pieces also included text written using India ink on tissue paper which forms her clothing. Bricks were formed by carving out bricks into a rubber Stamp and stamping on to the post its and then going over with a variety of different mediums.
The music that inspired my letter to my mom was ‘Distance’ by Liv, also inspired by my granddaughter who sings this song during voice lessons.”
