“This piece is intended to portray the bleakness of incessantly cleaning alone in the kitchen. The blue-greys of the background reflects the feelings of resentment I sometimes feel towards kitchen work.
My hand is quite red – it’s alive and warm, it is what I use to to create. The redness can be interpreted as the burning desire of this hand to be doing something passionate, and/or the anger of the hand that wants to create the art, but is instead banished to manipulating a wet rag. Or, I used a lot of cadmium red.
In recent years I have been interrogating the ways in which our assigned genders limit our lives and I often feel the weight of this when I am cleaning the kitchen alone and can feel my urges to make visual or musical art, pulling me to catch up on the years I never spent creating.
For some context, I’m 41, I live with my two kids and my partner. I love them all and they deserve the effort I make to cook for them – wanted to make that clear!
I’m self-taught and began art from scratch, 4.5 years ago.
There are a number of areas that need further work, but I crammed this in about five hours and couldn’t look at it anymore.”

“This artwork was surprisingly personal for me as working as a dishwasher, I hate doing dishes, so I just wash them and throw them all in the dish strainer.”
