Aim for a very wide range of emotions and try not to let any two look the same. Don’t pick random emotions, show emotions that are specific to your character. (Huey Freeman never smiles, ever!)

Character Design: Facial Expressions

Drawing a wide range of facial expressions is a great skill for character design! In this drawing tutorial, prompts for different facial expressions are provided: confused, furious, disgusted, heartbroken, and flirty.

This video explores different ways of achieving a expression with Procreate. Demo led by Teaching Artists Deepti Menon and Jordan McCracken-Foster.

Artistic Anatomy Lecture: The Face

This video explains how to the structure of the head is organized. All of the major boney landmarks are covered, as well as how to identify them on a person.

In addition to explaining how to articulate bones like the mandible, the zygomatic arch, etc., this lecture shows how to group these bones together to create a convincing portrait.

Lecture by Art Prof Clara Lieu.
