This video shows the results of the 2021 July Art Dare: creating characters based on your worst trait, and your best trait. The 2021 September Art Dare is to create a video short, 30 seconds or less that is related to your practice as an artist. Discussion led by Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Deepti Menon.

“I knew from the get-go that I wanted to personify imagination as my positive trait. As a constant daydreamer, it has been like a friend and second home to me for literally as long as I can remember. A multi-tasking, colourful, and wise little dude.

My negative trait was harder. I made a sad, old judge. I have periods when I get obsessed with morality, and exhaust or even depress myself over it. It’s no good, and this lil guy knows it. So he’s doing what he does best: soothing The Judge, with one of his many hands, and cheering him up, with the duck!”

“Best trait: All the cats in the neighbourhood like me. Since the pandemic started I have found myself traversing the neighbourhood. I am always happy to see them when I take a walk. ‘
Worst trait: I am allergic to cats. While petting the neighbourhood cats is a joyful experience, the itchy eyes and difficulty breathing I suffer from afterwards is not. I do not have it in my heart to turn them away, and let’s be honest, it’s worth it.
Worst trait: I am terrified of all Zoom calls. I cannot bring myself to sit through these interactions. I hoped to show how trapped and uncomfortable I feel while sitting in front of a computer for hours on end.
Worst trait: Sometimes I use too much black ink, Best trait: Sometimes I use just enough black ink. I love the way the nib pen feels in my hand. Unfortunately I am obsessed with all of the lines, and sometimes I add too many. Other times however, the ink creates contrast and the shockingly dark lines draw the eye in.”
